November is diabetes month. Type 1 diabetes, often referred to as juvenile diabetes, accounts for at least 85% of all diabetes cases in youth under 20 years of age worldwide. About 85% of people newly diagnosed with type 1 do not have a family history of type 1 diabetes. Being overweight or obese is a significant risk factor for the development of Type 2 diabetes, with 85% of people with Type 2 diabetes being overweight or obese.
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) was founded in 1970 by a group of parents of children living with type 1 diabetes. The founding members formed the organization with the intent to find a cure for type 1 diabetes and its complications by advocating for research. JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) historically has a strong focus on academic-based research, with more than 85% of its current funding committed to it. On June 4, 2024, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) adopted Breakthrough T1D as its new name.
Join us in creating a brighter future for youth with juvenile diabetes. Together, we can make a difference!
